No Scary Movies For Me

The games of ghosts and scares of the night

Are never the ones I wanted to see.

The howls of the wolves

Or the cooing of the owls

The stories in the dark

With my sister holding the light

Are haunted house visions that give me a fright.

The haunting music that signals a scare

And the scary stories at bedtime were never my thing.

My sister, however, was much braver than me

Eagerly waiting for those shows on TV.

She’d keep me up at all hours of the night,

Enjoying my squirming, and always sudden flight.

Secretly though, I would happily give

My big sister’s longing for moral support.

She was always the happiest the scarier the tale.

Yet with every review, I would find a way to bail.

The haunted houses and stories are just not my thing

But I love my big sister, so I stayed with my eyes closed – listening!

Its About Taste

Sometimes it’s hard to decide

What treat it’s safe to eat.

The chocolates

And cheesecake slices

Ice cream delights

And biscuits

Are ready and waiting for me.

Yet, I pause a lot

Because the calories I’m counting

And gratification comes at a cost.

Will my diet go haywire

Will my discipline be derailed

I’m still thinking what choice I will make.

However, in my mind

I know it will be

A frozen yogurt

Of any flavor I will choose.

After the first bite

And that delicious creamy taste

It is the obvious decision on my plate.

I don’t ever feel guilty

Because with this treat

My cravings are satisfied to the max.

It’s the afterglow I get

When my urges are met

Thus, I’m sated, and elated

Without wrath.

That Autumn Place

Autumn will take me to another place

 Not where I am

But where I wish to see again.

There is no autumn in the Caribbean

But we have some days that remind me of

That other place.

The Caribbean breezes

And the warm beach on an evening

The orange and yellow sky

On a morning, sometimes

Remind me of that autumn place

I hope to see again.

Before my memory fades

And I forget all I wish to remember

I want to feel that wisp of a chill

That heralds a new season is close.

The days I love them most

With colors to be adored – like me

I miss that autumn place.

Living With Peace

I am at peace with my past, though it still trips up my present now.

The things that push me forward, disturb my inner joy.

What lies beneath the surface, is hidden from all view

The peace that I enquire on, daily gets to be renewed.

Peace does not run before me, nor do I leave it behind

The way that life unfolds for me, is different and always kind.

As I think about the hope I feel, and the future not far away.

Peace knocks my heart’s door, and I let it in

My peace is here to stay.

Connecting The Years

The memories connect the past and the present. Its an entire story, each life. Sometimes the paragraphs are years ongoing, and suddenly the last words are written. Time and life can seem long but there is a connector between the beginning and end. The connector joins each year seamlessly together, and therein lies our memories.

Let me Connect the years…

When I was six, my world seemed vast

The swing was how I travelled fast.

At ten and twelve I was ready to live my dreams

Believing that my life would be all I wanted it to be.

Then when sixteen came around, I left home in a rush

My time here on earth was a card game holding a straight flush.

Well soon enough came eighteen, with a baby on the way

Life had many challenges I was preparing to slay.

At twenty had two sons, and wishful dreams of ever after,

Five years later those dreams were a disaster!

The struggle was real, then I turned twenty-eight,

My daughter was brewing, a beautiful baby on the way.

Finally, thirty came, and I struggled some more,

But had even more dreams in transit, and my house at thirty-four.

Thirty-six was the year I struck out with some risks

Forty-three came around, and everything was a near miss.

The business did well, until it did not,

My health took a dive,

The story just never stops.

Fifty -two is my year, at least it looks that way to me

With a lot of experience and its time for my happy!

Everyone is much older, but the connector is there

The memories in my story,

Move from my head.

If your life gives you lemons,

Make some juice and drink it quick

There’s no time to lay awaiting

For the memories to be made!

Give Me Flowers

I love flowers. They are such a frivolous loving gesture with no practical thought of what could be done with the money; and the few times I have received them it has been one of the best feelings being on the receiving end. Yes, flowers can get me going -smile- and I remember gazing at bouquets delivered to the ladies at work with envy, happiness and sadness. Well, I did get some flowers, and you can read about it below- Give me flowers!

“Flowers look nice

They looked great on the table next to my own

Wished there was a bunch to take home

They did not belong to me

Yet I enjoyed them immensely

One single bouquet for me to gaze upon

Given by my colleagues, with whom I got along

Okay, there was no romance,

A lot of appreciation and care.

From the folks I worked with

And it gave me a lot of cheer.

Was quite a happy time

Which I remember fondly

Yes I got to take home a bouquet

It filled my heart with glee.”

Coconut Time and The Business

Entrepreneurship and starting a business is a long term commitment. It can take a short or long time to move from developing your idea, creating a plan, developing a business plan, and testing your model to go to market. There are many ways to approach your objective, and reach your goals, but one thing is sure – it will take time to grow.

Everyone has a different style and way of doing things, and business development does not always follow academic or theoretical guidelines, though it helps with preparation. Getting your business started takes action, and direction, simply put – you have to plant the seed for the tree to grow and bear fruit. If you never plant the seed, and keep your idea in ‘developing/ideation stage’ there is nothing to grow.

In business for growth to take place trade actions and initiatives have to be present. You have to get it out there, and engage your product/ service with consumers. Everyone may not buy what you’re selling/offering, but some one will. Just like the coconut tree, you have to brave the elements, good and harsh conditions, to start getting responses. One day you will achieve your goals, and the fruits of your labour will be manifested in profits.

Persistence, perseverance, patience and time – together with continuous action are needed on this journey!

Go get your coconuts!

Before you go….

A Meadow Of Grace

The grassy bed up on the hill.

Was a place to escape

For my daily thrill.

To go outside away from it all

Was my secret place

With everyone around.

The space alone was under a tree,

With only the lizards to bother me.

You can see the grotto,

Where the priests would pray.

It was a sanctuary,

A place I wanted to stay.

You can call it a meadow, because of the ground

It’s what comes to mind if meadows are to be found.

Yet still if I consider

My Scottish retreat many years ago,

I walked through some meadows,

And never wanted to go home.

The air was very different, from my tropical breeze,

The birds and the sky seemed to envelope me.

Every moment I was able to run wild and free,

Was a moment I rejoiced for the blessing from Thee.

Blessed beyond measure, to discover another secret place,

Made for me by Jesus,

a meadow of grace.

Another Dance

Another Dance

Move onto the floor

Gaze around in this place

Find the one who connects with you

As you seek to find your space.

Move your eyes to the left

With a smile and a glance

Sway gently to the sounds,

Its your music, so just dance.

Move your feet with a lift

Take your eyes away from him

Just focus on the sound

As you quickly move around.

Its your night, your time to shine

Your eyes revert to seek him out

Its okay to dance for him to see

Give him a dance for memory.

Dance, dance

It’s just another night to put on a show

Fast or slow no one else will know,

Don’t give into the eyes

That are waiting patiently

To return to the arms that forever will be

A reminder of the night when they first met

Dance my darling, life has no regrets.

Reflections

The past is never what it appears to be

Weighing pros and cons from my reverie.

The things gone by are a lesson for life,

Moving on with a future, uncertain of luck or strife.

As I reflect upon the things, I did in my past

These reflections are deep

Sometimes showing up for contrast.

Though I try to keep them from coming forward

It’s a struggle to not think of how things can have power

This journey I walk is always alone

For this very reason, ensured I have a home.

Reflecting on things I have not managed yet to do

Is a reminder that regrets sometimes - do follow you.

I’ve always wanted to be the best mother I could be

Not sure if you asked my kids, if they would agree.

There is never a day when I’ve forgotten my role

As a mother is forever, all over the world.

They are older, and no longer holding onto my skirts

Now, forever I reflect of God’s blessings with their birth!

Thinking back

No longer playful

I used to be.

The trees always beckoned me.

Loved hiking, the water, trekking in the wild.

Playfully lit with spontaneous smiles.

No longer playful

I used to be.

Running a thousand steps, happily.

As the gates opened, my strides went to the line.

Playfully running; happiness was mine.

Forgot how to be playful

Probably too old to be.

It requires activity, that feels uneasy.

Got to get back that spark, and desire for fun

The clock has been ticking; its time for the sun.

Thinking back from the past

Reflections have begun,

On the days when playing was actually done.

Will book me a weekend, at a place far away

Hopefully I will find, some time to play!

A Canopy of Grace

Drop your canopy O Lord, let it fall on the earth.

Let it pick up all the people who are suffering and hurt.

Let your canopy be big enough, that everyone can fit,

Lord please I beg you, allow everyone to see it.

Drop your canopy on the ground O Lord,

Because some people cannot look up high

For these are the people who love you, and without it may surely die.

Drop your canopy dear Lord, for the little children to see

Especially, the ones who are impoverished and living in poverty

Drop your biggest canopy dear God on the earth

Let it be enough, like a berth awaiting vessels to sail

A mooring prepared with glorious flair, just waiting

For the people to get there.

Drop it, just drop it on the earth

Drop it because you care.

Please let your canopy fall dear Lord, because not everyone can see

Let the ones who need it most dear Lord, be covered by its safety.

Drop your canopy my Lord and Savior, drop it on the ground

Let it be big enough that everyone can fit on it and be safe and sound.

My Canopy

A Canopy of Faith

Which I profess

My life is a story

Of the times, I’ve been blessed.

A childhood of joy, mirrored with some pain and sadness

But there is always my hope

My life in this world.

There are very few times

My faith has not been tested

Indeed, but for my beloved Jesus

My heart would not have rested.

This canopy of hope has resulted from my faith

The lessons from life

Proved my God is great.

I’m covered by a canopy

Which keeps me safe at night

Giving me protection

Cloaking with its light.

As my destiny unfolds

Let me share this with you

Jesus Christ is a canopy; for me and for you.

Dancing Swirls

Dance, yes you girl

Make the wind swirl,

Around your legs

As you pivot and float.

Jump up high and hold onto the air

Your swirling dance moves, without a care.

You don’t stand still

With the music swirling around

Everyone is amazed

Yet you never hear a sound.

Dance, yes you girl

It was always meant to be

The rhythm and your movement

Just perfection and harmony.

Swirling Thoughts

You got me stumped,

Now I must think.

How can I even contemplate,

the idea of swirling?

Its either an ice-cream being swirled in a mix,

Or maybe it’s some plasticine,

Made from rows of colored sticks?

I’m not sure if I got this one,

And I’m not sure if I can see,

If anything around can swirl into my brain,

Just to make sense of this word ‘swirl’ for me.

At first I thought maybe its dancing,

With my skirt swirling around my knees,

But suddenly realized I’d fall flat on my face

If some swirling really took place!

Considering next a few splashes of paint

Thrown on a paper to create a design,

Suddenly that swirl made a lot of sense

Understanding right before my eyes.

So okay Eugenia, think I’ve got a writing plan

And a way to take swirl ‘mainstream’.

Kindly make it a little easier, for me to think again

Cause this one, is hodgepodge on my screen!

A Rainbow Story

Raced up the hill to look outside
To see the rainbow colors which cannot hide
The grass was wet
And down I rolled
Beyond my house
Far down the narrow road.
The birds looked on
Chirping in delight
The dogs stepped aside
To see my disaster flight.
The sun shifted past the clouds
Exclaiming with glee
Come out and let’s play
And bring your family!

As I landed at the bottom of the hill,
Lay on my back,
For a moment very still.
Gazing up at the sky,
It was simply wonderful to see
The rainbow was looking right down at me.
What a beautiful sight
As the birds made their songs,
The puppy and the frogs
All jumped up and down.
Contentment and joy
Descended from above,
Softly whispering to me,
Here is the rainbow you love!

Back as a human 2023

It’s been almost the entire year, but writing has been harder than normal. The words would come into my head but my fingers were not align...
