Coconut Time and The Business

Entrepreneurship and starting a   business  is a long term commitment. It can take a short or long time to move from developing your idea, creating a plan, developing a business plan, and testing your model to go to market. There are many ways to approach your objective, and reach your goals, but one thing is sure – it will take time to grow. Everyone has a different style  and way of doing things, and business development does not always follow academic or theoretical guidelines, though it helps with preparation. Getting your business started takes action, and direction, simply put – you have to plant the seed for the tree to grow and bear fruit. If you never plant the seed, and keep your idea in ‘developing/ideation stage’ there is nothing to grow. In business for growth  to take place trade actions and initiatives have to be present. You have to get it out there, and engage your product/ service with consumers. Everyone may not buy what you’re selling/offering, bu...

Always Extraordinary

Photo Credits: unsplash.com/Steve Halama Do you really want to be extraordinary? Let me go - Not into the light but into the darkness. Let me find that place where others fear to walk. In the light, my light cannot be seen easily. It is in the challenges, That my glow will show, And it takes the fears and greater effort, To find that glorious difference. If I walk into that unknown dark place, It says that I am strong, I am able, I am not giving up, I am not letting go of, Taking chances and looking past risks, Not letting go of hope, trust, Not holding back on forgiveness and love. Walking into that different and dark place, Says that I am not afraid to be, Extraordinary! 14/03/2021 Eugi’s Causerie weekly prompt is the inspiration for this poem. Out of the Box Thinking

Innovation and growth are present to disrupt the status quo.  We can learn on many levels and in multiple areas based on differences. The key for growth with differences is to harness newness and build on improvements. Seek out what can make differences work.  Innovate and create building on uniqueness because this is discovery. We are facing different right now. It’s time to think outside of the box. #discovery #disruption #differences #innovation #dream   Find me on: Twitter  https://twitter.com/DLE41  or email:  dwordslayer@gmail.com Photo Credit:  Eirik Uhlen www. unsplash.com © Donna-Luisa Eversley and D-WORDSLAYER, 2020. Failing Up

There is only one ‘F’ word we fear as business people The thing about life is we don’t ever know when we will succeed or when we will fail. Yes, I’ve said it. The most difficult F word we try to avoid as business people is Fail. Its considered a negative word and one which should be replaced by a few words or phrases, such as “ it was an interesting period”, “ we did the best we could based on the circumstances”, or maybe we can simply say, “it was the result of an unexpected challenge.” Well let me change the way we admit when defeat happens. I failed. I thought I had all my bases covered, thought the challenges would eventually be overcome. I failed to prepare for the possibility I would need an exit strategy sooner than expected, and one day I had a head on crash. Of course after the fact, there are many things I could have done better. At the time though, when the walls were closing in survival was not as important as not failing. That ‘F’ word happened but I gain...

Creativity, Innovation, Recycling: Opportunity waits for your action

Most entrepreneurs are not afraid to take risks! I started my first business at eighteen . There was a demand for a product which was always out of stock and decided to make my own. At the time I was not thinking about business plans or securing financing, and was clueless about manufacturing. Nevertheless, with boldness and more bravery than ever, I decided to ‘make some money’. Here is the story. Creativity, Innovation & Recycling Shoulder pads were the ‘in thing’. All garments especially ladies dresses, suits and shirts came with shoulder pads. I bought a ‘shoulder shaved pair of foam’ uncovered for $6 to $9 a pair. If it was covered it was upwards of $10. I liked to sew and design and made all my clothes. I was know by the owners and employees at most of the fabric stores because I was always looking for deals. My wages were small, but my desire for fashion was big! Everyday, I went to work for eight hours and returned home after collecting my newborn son fro...

A Job Well Done

An Everest I looked up and my heart was filled with pride and at the same time I was in awe. Here I stood beneath the silver ceiling, cool and comfortable, looking at my project. The first big one undertaken some years ago has stood the test of time. There was a lot of movement in the warehouse. The forklifts and people were busy moving in and out. The place was filled with activity and action, and I felt that sense of accomplishment one can only feel when they have climbed an Everest. Happy customers What are you prepared to do to ensure your customers are happy, not just for the short term, but for a long time?  As I gazed at the ceiling, someone touched my shoulder. From the moment I entered to the present the workers were coming up and asking when will the other parts of the warehouse be insulated and ventilated. Without words they seemed to understand it was not as simple as it appeared, and were grateful for the relief they experienced daily within the area....

Engagement - Recurring Decimals & Skateboarding!

Skateboarding logic "I am afraid of falling, but I will always take a chance!"(Eversley,2015) Skateboarders, I think are some crazy interesting people. These guys do not play it safe. Why would you want to skate down stairs or a railing? Let’s take the stairs – its constant small drops, and jerks while on a piece of board or plastic on wheels. The image says it all. That's not my son, its another young hero, but Andrew swears its perfection! These guys know how to fall, and they are actually thinking about what they did wrong while falling. At least my first son Andrew expressed this as we discussed his passion for that extreme sport. Andrew is also a Liverpool soccer fan  ( we call it football), and he gets a lot of ribbing for supporting a team which does not seem to like to win much - my opinion! He loves the team, and their team spirit, making sure we know their club song “You’ll never walk alone”. He is loyal, and will support that team win, lose or...

Walk On Water

The unseen In 2007 I started my second business venture and left the corporate world. It was during this time I understood what it means to have an entrepreneurial spirit. Entrepreneurs are a different breed of people. We risk. We believe. We have to have faith in what we are doing and our ability to succeed. There was a time when I faced one of my battles, an adversity of a corporate nature, and learnt my spiritual convictions were needed to persevere. Let me share my prayer which has been on the refrigerator door from 2007 when written; Walk on Water.... Lord I promise you today that if I am blessed with another moment another second, another day, without fear that I will sink into the depths that are so very deep I will walk towards you. I will place my hands in yours and let you lead me safely to the place you want me to be. Lord, if my eyes should be moved from you, if only for a moment, a second,or even a day and the depths below should rise to consume me don't le...

LET’S TALK – WHY NEGOTIATE

The Why…. Understanding why we enter into negotiation with another party is critical to the outcome of the negotiations. The following are some business reasons; To grow existing market – Penetration Expand in a particular area of expertise -Specialization Improve present position by allegiance – Expansion Broaden offering to market – Diversification To strengthen market position – Competitive advantage For business continuity – Sustainability Companies need to remain viable and even dominant in their given markets. A great example is Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Both brands have managed over decades to rotate at number one and two positions in beverages worldwide for decades. The boardroom and local markets have seen some incredible negotiation tactics as their rivalry is legend! NEGOTIATING SUCCESSFULLY!

Compromise Successful negotiation is about both parties ending with benefits based on deliberations. For this to happen the following is suggested; Both parties should agree on a timeline for the discussions before starting Willingness of all parties to give the opportunity to express Willingness off all parties to listen to what the other is saying Clearly stating concerns and any disagreements Asking for clarity on anything not understood An open and frank atmosphere Respectful interactions Compromise   Meeting at a location which is neutral to both parties is always best but sometimes not possible. If this happens the hosting party should ensure the guest has all professional courtesies available. Entering the negotiation should begin with trust, and it is a necessary element for there to be a successful outcome! Tip Be prepared for your discussion. Negotiation and compromise go hand in hand. Be open, be clear and always enter with the mindset that the best ...
