Freedom of the Press/Freedom of the People

A Good Man Departs…Ushering in The Opposite There is much respect  for outgoing USA President Barack Obama. The humility, respect and class of this world leader never ceases to amaze me. As I read an article about his last press meeting, it was not difficult to compare it to the first press conference of the incoming USA President. These men are so different, yet the responsibility of the ‘office’ is the same. As President Barack Obama advised the press, they are needed to keep the office of the president in check. The press is needed to keep whoever is governing from committing acts which are not in the best interests of the country. The press are the guardians of democracy and the mouth piece by which the public will know that power is not being abused. When the incoming president met with the press he attacked them, disrespected those who chose to ask him basic questions, and called them fake. In my country there is a saying, “if you have cocoa in the sun, look out...

The Changing of the Guard

It drawers closer… The thing about history is – something happened previously. It can be moments before, days before, or many ages before. History holds the archives of our decisions, actions and consequences. Slavery, and its oppressive nature happened. The Klu Klux Klan aka KKK was and is real. The brutality against minorities from time immemorial has a place in the bowels of the world. We thought we had moved on… we did not. Obviously.  Oppression, hatred and white supremacy crimes happened and continues to happen. If we look at the western societies which we assume to be civilized, we can see vestiges of something which should never be in our present. To unearth ancient civilizations it takes skilled archeologists to discover under tons of rubble, lost cities and artifacts. Many of these things we use to understand what was there before, and why it no longer is. There are somethings we can all hope to banish into oblivion, so it cannot be found, such a...

Googlers, Pens and growing up!

A small thought can lead to the profound… This morning  while sharing some thoughts on my childhood with two of my children, I looked at myself in the mirror. I have a pair of glasses which I consider ‘googlers’. These spectacles are not my favorite, but they have the most features. I could not find my sunshades and resorted to their photo-grade feature of darkening with the sun. Thus began this whimsical conversation as I asked, “How did Google decide on the name google,  I wonder if they were thinking of googlers?” My son and daughter looked at me mystified and wary of how I would respond to this rhetorical question? I have this strange habit when I’m thinking to ask and answer questions all at once. Then of course a historical moment of reminiscing, brought forth the following; “When I was at school we called some spectacles ‘googlers’. Googlers were the type of frames and lenses which brill...

The Blogging Society

The Blogging Society Today marks the first day in a collaboration between Laura Mikolaitis and myself. We have embarked on a connection between the USA and Trinidad, cold and hot weather with our personalities and pen as our armor. We met online, and our words have been speaking to each other. Laura M (as I will fondly call her) shares some comments which blow me away and send me into deep thought and emotion most times. She is daring, witty and a ‘marketing savant’, and great blog supporter. Before I heard her voice, I knew she would sound as she did. She sounds all girly and strong with a bit of laughter in her tone. I’ve discovered over the past months we share a passion for ‘humanitarian advocacy’ in the workplace and have a shared compassion for taking care of those who need a voice. We now share our voices and perspectives on some questions on blogging! Can blogging be considered ‘news’ or opinions? Donna-Luisa:   Well initially I thought blogging was more about ...

WHO ARE THE BLOGGERS - CHEERLEADERS.. PART 3

The Past From the days of  William Shakespeare, writers have longed to cultivate an audience willing to listen. In fact, from the beginning of time there have been writers of words, documenting cultural and social issues. Histories have been told illustrating the wonder of storytelling, imagination and society. Things have simply evolved, with bloggers taking the mantle of “social speech”. This is a historic occasion, a time when documenting life has become three dimensional, embracing reality, perceptions, possibilities! Technology and the present ‘Big data'( a collection of  data sets aka information ) is mined for ease of access,to ensure speed and reliability of information available on almost any conceivable topic. Does this affect the blogging community – it sure does. Everything we write is collected, curated, pooled through the various social media sites, making anonymity virtually impossible. By whatever name you wish to be called you are known. If you can b...
