League of Legends… ‘NGOTB’(New gamer on the block)

Change at any age This all started when I read an article on Medium “ I’m learning to code at 56. Here’s an epic beat-down of my inner critical self.” by VM Vaughn . The guy is a bit older than I am and he has the guts to try coding — something I want to try. It was a real ‘soul bearing’ post, with a lot of lessons on being open to change — whatever your age! If you have not read it, I’m urging you to take a read. Its all about perspectives There is a whole lot of baloney we can buy into, if we keep our heads firmly buried in the sand. Think I managed to yank my very dusty head out of the rubble of misconception recently, when I decided to tackle League of Legends. Yes. I did it. If there are any parents, older feeling folks, sanctimonious religious people, narrow minded oblivious brethren, and archaic thinking soothsayers, my advice to you is — try it! I like the way the game played me. It really did, and I enjoyed my first efforts so much, it only took twelve hours to...

Googlers, Pens and growing up!

A small thought can lead to the profound… This morning  while sharing some thoughts on my childhood with two of my children, I looked at myself in the mirror. I have a pair of glasses which I consider ‘googlers’. These spectacles are not my favorite, but they have the most features. I could not find my sunshades and resorted to their photo-grade feature of darkening with the sun. Thus began this whimsical conversation as I asked, “How did Google decide on the name google,  I wonder if they were thinking of googlers?” My son and daughter looked at me mystified and wary of how I would respond to this rhetorical question? I have this strange habit when I’m thinking to ask and answer questions all at once. Then of course a historical moment of reminiscing, brought forth the following; “When I was at school we called some spectacles ‘googlers’. Googlers were the type of frames and lenses which brill...

Engagement - You got game !

Family Business Travel My second son Aaron, traveled with me to London for a business meeting a couple years ago. We were travelling with Virgin Atlantic ( best airline!) via Barbados, and I used the opportunity to meet with a major business customer. Aaron, had never been to Barbados, and was quite pleased to meet with the customer, and see  a bit of the island. The sea surrounds everything and he enjoyed lunch over looking the beautiful ocean with our client. It was in his opinion a great place for a business meeting with excellent food! Aaron, is a Manchester United Soccer fan ( we call it football)  and can also be considered a gamer. He is in a 'stuffy traditional career'- accountant, and an entrepreneur, as is my elder son. The genesis of this post is actually based on a conversation he was sharing with his brother. I was eavesdropping and enjoyed the experience, though I did jump in at the end!  Gaming requires engagement! "You are, either a part...

Got Smart - Social Media

Mobile phones got smart! In 2009 I got my first Blackberry and I got smart. Suddenly, computers were more than email related, and mobile was the way a boyfriend should be – close by. They 'the computers' had strange things taking place which I could not see. My sons would go crazy with rolling eyes as my awe was filled with unknown fear and disgust. Strong words for strong feelings.  I’ll blame it on ‘the apps’ and the ‘imaginary people’ and those crazy ‘viruses that can crash metal & plastic’. That’s why I must start with the internet – a dragon to slay . “You’re talking to the imaginary people again. When will you stop? I hope you are getting your school work done? They are not real; no one exists in a computer? This can’t be a game on a computer talking back at you, sounding human!”   My words were filled with annoyance to my sons, a regular conversation, which they chuckled at in despair at my archaic understanding. Finally I discovered Facebook and Fa...
