Coconut Time and The Business

Entrepreneurship and starting a   business  is a long term commitment. It can take a short or long time to move from developing your idea, creating a plan, developing a business plan, and testing your model to go to market. There are many ways to approach your objective, and reach your goals, but one thing is sure – it will take time to grow. Everyone has a different style  and way of doing things, and business development does not always follow academic or theoretical guidelines, though it helps with preparation. Getting your business started takes action, and direction, simply put – you have to plant the seed for the tree to grow and bear fruit. If you never plant the seed, and keep your idea in ‘developing/ideation stage’ there is nothing to grow. In business for growth  to take place trade actions and initiatives have to be present. You have to get it out there, and engage your product/ service with consumers. Everyone may not buy what you’re selling/offering, bu...

Dwordslayer quotes - Change

This year has been filled with changes. The end is coming and so to the beginning. The one certainty is change, and adapting is a given if we must survive and thrive. This quote is taken from Change, time and relationships  (2018) and gives us something to consider as we move forward. What do you think will be different next year? Do you think you will welcome the new, or will you cling to the old? Going back is not an option, so why not make each change count?  Keep safe. Dwordslayer

Sharing that not so good review!

Giving the r eviews... What do you do when you want to leave a realistic honest review but know the other side won't take it well?  In the past I would never be afraid about sharing a review which is negative, however we live in a society where less than positive reviews are frowned upon. Everyone's opinion is just that... an opinion. If the experience one had is negative, should that review not be shared?  There is a saying I've developed over the years, "If himself tells himself he is good, then he is good in his vision and his reality is himself!". From political, social, religious, and even personal perceptions, growth can only be exponential if the views and others are considered. It does not mean we must change to suit others, but simply means everyone is not receiving what we think we are giving. There is also the perspective that coming out of differences we can learn and improve. I recall at an office party for an outgoing manager ...

Just bring it on - I'm Ready!

Just bring it on! The journey of this life is amazing. Maybe if I were in the army I would be a decorated officer. It feels like I’ve been out to battle – and won! Thank you, sweet Jesus. Victory is overcoming an enemy according to the online dictionary, and I sure feel like Mohammed Ali, and Serena Williams or maybe I'm feeling like the best me ever! So what comes after victory? Before winning we prepare and implement then execute. The euphoria of winning will last for a while but then it fades, and victory is in the past. It was something we accomplished, something we worked at but now its time to move on. Moving on from accomplishments can be hard, as it means something new must be done to make us relevant at work. You did a great job is in the past and you are doing a great job is the present, but I’m looking forward to you improving on your great work is the future. Sitting on winnings can diminish value. When you do well it is expected you will increase, so ...

Get The Small Details Then The Big Picture

Conflicting objectives Today is a new day but in business we carry over the old problems challenges and situations to the next work period. Most times it will be the next day and it probably still looks the same. When we look at what must be done to complete a task or job we can encounter conflict. What is conflict or conflicting agendas? Well conflict in business relates to disagreement or something which brings a negative or alternate reaction to the surface. A good example can be the salesman trying to close a sale and needing support, being advised that the company has made its best offer and anything else will affect his commision rate. The company is holding its minimum margin and the rep grudgingly agrees to give up a part of his percentage. So what is the bigger picture here. A) the salesman needs the sale to meet his quota to gain commission for the month maybe even an additional incentive to pay his car insurance. B) the company can't afford to go lower beca...

The Greater Good

The following is published on Citizen4life, and is something to think about! The concept of the greater good is used to justify actions where loss affects a few/ or takes place to allow for a perceived greater benefit. There have been wars waged based on ‘the greater good’. During war it is believed that a few hundred men will sacrifice /lose their lives for their country to achieve their goal of strength or freedom. At work there are times when someone ‘takes one for the team’ because there are proposed future benefits for all. Sometimes it can be a salary to avoid layoffs, and at other times a salesman may be asked to allow another to take over a deal based on bigger benefits for the company in a bigger deal. Whatever the reason, it is considered a sacrifice for the benefit of others. As I think about this ‘rationale’ it seems that it is a double-edged sword which can be for both good or bad depending on the person using the phrase for justification of action or decision...

Grow into the best you:Create a career story you are proud to own

‘Homeless to Harvard’ is the 2003 Movie - ‘ Liz Murray’ story which inspires me when I need a reminder that my life is good. We need a reminder sometimes, because even your rock bottom can be bested by another. What matters most can sometimes be hidden behind survival mode. On other occasions the action of surviving is the trigger which explodes, fueling our passions. Our dreams can breathe life at these times. There is nothing quite as powerful as climbing a hill when you leave nothing behind. The same can be said for climbing when you know you have everything to return to. The things which act as catalysts to success are different for everyone. Here are (3)from my past I remember fondly; 1. The ‘adrenalin rush’. We were not rich, but my mother always found a way to ensure we survived. She was a teacher and published an anthology of poems ‘My Fist Fifty’ when I was twelve years old. I thought she was a star for doing so, and greatly admired her ambitious drive. I’m not su...

Failing Up

There is only one ‘F’ word we fear as business people The thing about life is we don’t ever know when we will succeed or when we will fail. Yes, I’ve said it. The most difficult F word we try to avoid as business people is Fail. Its considered a negative word and one which should be replaced by a few words or phrases, such as “ it was an interesting period”, “ we did the best we could based on the circumstances”, or maybe we can simply say, “it was the result of an unexpected challenge.” Well let me change the way we admit when defeat happens. I failed. I thought I had all my bases covered, thought the challenges would eventually be overcome. I failed to prepare for the possibility I would need an exit strategy sooner than expected, and one day I had a head on crash. Of course after the fact, there are many things I could have done better. At the time though, when the walls were closing in survival was not as important as not failing. That ‘F’ word happened but I gain...
