Get The Small Details Then The Big Picture

Conflicting objectives Today is a new day but in business we carry over the old problems challenges and situations to the next work period. Most times it will be the next day and it probably still looks the same. When we look at what must be done to complete a task or job we can encounter conflict. What is conflict or conflicting agendas? Well conflict in business relates to disagreement or something which brings a negative or alternate reaction to the surface. A good example can be the salesman trying to close a sale and needing support, being advised that the company has made its best offer and anything else will affect his commision rate. The company is holding its minimum margin and the rep grudgingly agrees to give up a part of his percentage. So what is the bigger picture here. A) the salesman needs the sale to meet his quota to gain commission for the month maybe even an additional incentive to pay his car insurance. B) the company can't afford to go lower beca...

When The Sun Stops Shining...

Finding Sun… The only perfection is in the one who created us. He made us and perfectly formed us giving us all a ‘free will’ to make decisions and choose. Yes, we are the ones who decide where we go, and what we will do on this journey called life. I’m going to pull this one  from very deep within, as I seek to share with you a place of peace and reassurance. The road gets rough sometimes, and we still need to get a ‘move on it’ and live, achieve and accomplish.  What do you do  when life feels like the sun has stopped shining, and the cloudy skies empty a downpour of continuous rain? What happens when you get to the point of frustration, when clinging to hope seems in vain? Well, today is the day  you get to let the sun out if it’s not shining in your life. It’s also the day; you get to share your sunlight with someone who is having a cloudy day! It is important to know that you hold sunshine which you can draw on, and you can also share some light with ...

The Business Of Fixing...

Getting a Light-bulb Moment There are few times I cannot write. This is one of those times. Words should offer some level of hope. This is my philosophy. This is my way. There are so many negatives and crisis in the air around, adding to it will not differentiate you. Walking in misery will not change your circumstances – it will make the journey harder, and you will miss the momentum of life, and a good fix! The Personal to Fix  For many months one of my doctors has been going through my healing process with me. He has seen me during body spasms of severe pain and has found alternative means of reducing the pain with less medication - heated blanket and a 'tens unit'. I like the way this doctor thinks. He has referred me to other specialists and continues to believe that one day this journey will end positively. I am severely sensitive to temperature since the accident. I use a winter jacket in a tropical country when I need to enter an air-conditioned room. On e...

Humanitarian Advocacy 3 - The Real Cost of War & Justice (Part 2)

A Just Society "Justice is difficult for those with limited or no resources to fight." (Eversley,2016) In part 1, we saw a war declared, and the battle cry which followed was crushing.  The organization, the institution, the country have the resources and the capacity to crush the employee who dares to fight and not comply.  The Business Dictionary Online  defines 'justice' in the workplace in the following way:- “ Fairness in protection of rights, and punishment of wrongs. While all legal systems aim to uphold this ideal through fair and proper administration of the law of the land, it is possible to have unjust laws.”(Business Dictionary.com, 2015) Goliath v Employee How is an employee, an individual to take on this Goliath who holds freedom from economic poverty by employment? Goliath holds the keys to unlock statutory benefits based on compulsory subscriptions to government institutions. Goliath has the power of political affiliations in many...

Humanitarian Advocacy 2 - The sick & injured warrior!

I would not describe myself as brave.  I’m afraid of rodents, insects, and cringe when going to the dentist! There is something deep, deep inside my being though which abhors injustice, making it impossible for me to sit quietly. Never choosing to fight for myself, I would march quite boldly to defend another. In defense of others we can be fierce, but it takes that much more in defense of ourselves. There is a movie, I like to refer to when discussing human behavior  – 'Law Abiding Citizen', with Gerard Butler & Jamie Fox. The show revolves around a man’s fight for justice in an unfair system, created by those who are expected to uphold the law. He waits on justice and it was unfair. A plea bargain for testimony against the partner set the real perpetrator free - a man who raped and murdered  the wife and young daughter of a law abiding citizen. To change the system, while extracting his own justice, the victim, became the villain. I don't think he deserved the ...

Humanitarian Advocacy -1

Humanitarian Advocacy  can be simply defined as the action and process of supporting a cause to make other people’s lives better! There is a reason to promote a culture of humanitarian advocacy for all businesses as they seek their own success. What do people mean to you? You being, the people hiring the people, and the people responsible for employee welfare and good corporate governance. While we associate humanitarianism with world crisis, it really starts closer to home. This week, my focus is on those persons who are veterans of a different kind of war – Corporate injustice. No one sets out in life to fight legal battles . If we did, we would all have a diploma in legal studies. Yet somehow if I polled ten persons in a room, most would have a story of something legal they were involved in. When we go out for employment, there are contracts for everything, and a lot people just sign on the dotted line, skimming through based on the level of trust and need for the po...
