Inspired By The Challenges

A gentle reminder

The challenges of the day should be embraced. This is how we get to test ourselves and be prepared for the next level in our lives. Maybe, there is no food for today, no money for today, and dire straits aka tough times are looming near. Your back is up against the wall, and you are flustered. At that moment stand up, and walk away from that place where you are. Take a few steps, and look behind.

Now you can walk forward. Where you were is not where you have to be. You just made a choice. It may seem like a small step, but it was a big move.

When we were growing up there were days there was no food, buts somehow my mother could prepare a meal with rice and margarine, and it tasted like fine cuisine. There were days when we lived on hope and a prayer. We lived, we grew, we overcame our challenges. Yes, my mother was employed as a teacher, but there are many who are employed living in a state of poverty. There is a cost to living and a cost to working. For many, the very basic necessities are not covered with the minimum wage or their basic pay, yet they work. They get up and go out to work, because the possibility of being in a worse present is worth the sacrifice. It is but for a short time. Something else is on the horizon, and being out there makes it easier to be seen, and distinguished. I can attest to that. Look at what hope and a prayer and action is able to do each day. We - my sisters and I, all lived and grew up. The moments of  our deepest struggles can be the fuel needed for the biggest battles to be faced. Victory is greatest when you move beyond into what may be only a dream and a wish to be uncovered.

Live each day, and love each moment.

I hope these words will inspire you today. Thank you for reading, your comments and sharing to those you hope to inspire by these words.

Bee Social Bee Happy

A Happy Day

This morning, I awoke and I'm happy. What is different about today may not appear significant to someone, but to me its extra special. I'm not sure what is going to be different but expect a great day. To be awake means another day to be the same or be different.

Some things can look the same, but when you look closer the differences are facing you.

You can find what you seek, and you can be who you want to be. That's within your control.

Its time to BEE SOCIAL...

Just warming up to more.. Bee Social

As you cool down, remember to Bee Social....

When each day is over, and we reflect, we can see how much sun and light came into our day, or how much darkness blocked our sun. We can see hope or we can feel helpless.

Sometimes what appears to be falling is actually giving you a change to stop, and take shade. Maybe it's all part of the lessons in our lives. I don't have all the answers. None of us do!

Find the beauty in the things you may never see again - like a baby learning to walk, or the man around the corner asking for a little help. They are in your life for a reason, even if you don't capture the moments. This is your life. Take it, and give something good in return. Be happy, be blessed, be true.

I choose to be happy, while I am here on this beautiful earth.

Thank you for reading, commenting and sharing. Words can make a positive difference to someone when we share.

Be Social with me and others join and share on Bee Social Hive..

Eating Anyone?

Case: The belly growls

One of the best ways to learn is from experience. To gain experience you have to perform an action, and sometimes you may feel uncomfortable. Sometimes you decisions are winners and sometimes you just mess up. Its okay to fail, and its okay to not be happy with the results, but what's not okay, is to not try. I've been called unconventional, and bold, but its how this passion for execution works with me. Breaking the rules have taught me more than toeing the line. Here is my first installment on cases for consideration in management from real events, real people, and real action!

The security guard opened the gate. The clock on the dashboard gazed back at me 4:15am. As I drove into the compound, there were 2 vehicles waiting, their drivers jumped out.

"Good morning Boss", the first guy said as he approached my jeep.

"Hey, morning Boss, I was here first can I leave as soon as possible. Today its a long run." The second man looks at me with a smile, as he gets closer.

"Good morning Diego, good morning Devin. Glad you guys are here. This morning I have a surprise. Please have some breakfast before you leave, there is a lot - so enjoy." As I looked at the guys their shock and amazement is heart-breaking. "Here, can you give me a hand with those bags in the back and go easy with the trays."

They both stand still, gazing at me as though they had seen a ghost.
Devin is the first to speak, "Boss, are you serious. You brought us breakfast. Wow, no one has ever done that before, and I've been here five years. You for real? But you are the Boss."

Diego just stands, looking at me. As I look at him he looks away. We get into the building and the rest of the guys enter, and are all looking stunned by everything they see.

"Guys, you are my team. Every single one of you are part of my team. On my watch, you eat every morning before you go out there. If you can be sure of one thing every day, is breakfast from this company. It's nothing fancy, just basic sandwich or cookies and coffee or juice every morning." As I look around the rest of my team are there listening. Those faces don't look as happy as I had hoped they would be. They looked shocked. Dumbfounded. Not happy.

Diego is the first to speak, " Boss we are just surprised. You don't know us. You've not been here long, and yet you are being good to us. I'm not ashamed to say, no one has ever woken up and made breakfast for me before I come to work, and I have a wife. No one really cares if I eat, because we just have to go and make the money for the company. Yes we are paid, but its sometimes not enough to live, and we're hungry hoping someone will share their bread with us. Some customers share food with us sometimes. So we shocked. But thanks Boss. I appreciate it."

One by one the others come up to me, with shy smiles, some with blank face and glassy eyes, trying not to show emotion. They have their pride and its important they don't feel less as men because they have less. We go into the building and I lay the counter with coffee, tea, cocoa, milk, sugar. I'm trying not to look at them, because I'm not sure I want them to see how choked up I feel. As I uncover the trays and turn on the kettle,  a squeal erupts from another member of staff, "Look at how fantastic this all is. I could eat it all."
Another voice jumps in, " No, no Francis, you can take last, you are too greedy!" The guys  are busy commenting, joking and laughing but no one comes forward to eat. To get the guys started I pray out loud, "Thank you God for this meal. Bless the food, the guys and the business. Amen. Get cracking guys, and take any extras for lunch. Your trucks need to be out by 4:45am latest!

Managing  and the meal

There are many things I learnt from managing a distribution team, but the one thing which stays with me is how a simple act of kindness can impact of the lives of those we lead. It makes good business sense to know your staff and the environment they have to operate within. Expecting peak performance from members of the team who may be distracted by a lack of the basic necessities is foolhardy. What drew my attention to this need was observing the look of hunger on one of the guys one morning. I asked a few questions discretely, checked their earnings and did the math myself.

While we cannot be responsible for all their basic needs, sometimes its important to evaluate remuneration packages and seek ways to increase employee comfort to optimize performance. There are some things which help increase the overall value package offered by an organization, which won't break the bank. In many instances, when employees talk about their place of work, if you listen closely, its the things that are not included in the pay package which are highlighted.

Be an employer who cares about the welfare of staff. You can show interest without creating huge obligations which cannot be upheld.

Every time I think about those guys I smile. The genuine appreciation was worth much more than the thirty-five dollars to take care of my team daily. When I needed them to do more they would never grumble, but step up!

Maybe I have it all wrong, but I think leading with compassion and kindness won't make you weak, but can inspire your team to want to be loyal and to enjoy coming to work. This team thought I was 'dread' ( means no nonsense and tough), but felt I was fair most times - based on feedback!

Share your thoughts, on this case, and maybe how you would deal with a similar situation.

Flash Forward ...Its Today!

To Give….

( This was written a few months ago. For whatever the reason, today I'm publishing, and hope you are inspired to live! )

We are here for more than one purpose. I firmly believe that Jesus Christ died for me, you and everyone. Some may believe the same, and some may not. I love you all.

What would l like my legacy to be, came crashing in almost two years ago. I felt that if I should die, I have not given enough, done enough, or loved enough. My thoughts were not on how much more money I need for bills, or the millions I wish I had in a bank account for my kids… no I simply wanted to have given more than I have.

That thought hurt. The thought that I may not be around to give was building within me as I wrote. I needed in some way to share my heart, for others who could see, could give others their heart, making hearts that much bigger. A way of being of service.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can make death seem imminent.  If someone did not scream, and the car did not stop, I would be dead – but it stopped, and it will always stop, even in the flashbacks. Focus on the reality and the positives. There is a collage of feelings which I’ve been recovering from.  The one thing I appreciate about this is it makes me appreciate my life more.  You are quite unaware when you’re getting hit really hard remembering. It takes you back to that moment in time, when your life rushes to an end but it did not. Sympathy is not required - simply understanding.

If you have a strong positive hyper active personality like mine, this can shake your core if everything is pulled from you. Being forced to be slow is a challenge.  My biggest fight has been engaging my brain to think (winning). To come out of the darkness long enough to recall the light. My love for people has surely helped me, and because I could not go out I gave here, with words. It also let me focus on something other than the pain my body felt constantly.

Flash-forward…

I am doing fine. My body is healing and I'm stronger. There are some things which I will not be able to do, but they won't impact on my ability to live. Yes, I have much more than I thought, and I can work on different strengths. The physical body is amazing!

Understanding the triggers and how you can relive the past is a learning curve for anyone diagnosed with PTSD. Regaining some measure of control is good. You can calm your way out of the unexpected.  Being ready and thinking of the preparation which is there is a major source of comfort.

According to this Chinese Proverb, ‘The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step’. Wikipedia says it can be found in Chapter 64, Tao Te Ching, from Laozi.

One conscious movement, in the direction of forward makes all the difference. There are things you can control, and battles you can win. Let the one within be the beginning.

Start, go slowly, breathe in, breathe out and count… You are almost there!
From me to you...enjoy!

Finding the lost runner

I’m awake

It’s after 3:00am in the morning and I’m writing a quickie note. I’ve already had five hours sleep and I’m restless. As I check my Facebook account an article jumps out at me. Maybe its the photo, or maybe its the first post by a friend in a runner’s magazine / blog which catches me.

Pascal Derrien is a blogger and friend from Ireland. He runs. He cycles. He does the stuff I want to do, so reading his words is uplifting. I’m inspired, motivated and sometimes in awe. Here is the article I read, ”Lost In The Midlands On An Epic Adventure  from thesmartrunner.com  . The tag line for The Smart Runner is “eat smart, train smart, run smart”- I think they mean ‘live smart’!

Looking back

My daughter was around two and a half when I realized I needed to regain my fitness and relieve the stresses of being a single working mom. Coping with everything relating to parenting was always better when I felt good about myself. My sons were twelve and thirteen at the time, and my neighbor was a fitness instructor. We would leave for the stadium at around 4:00 am and return home by 5:15am. Her name is Althea and she was extremely fit and I felt motivated having a buddy work out with me. She is also one of the most caring and selfless persons I’ve ever met. As a personal trainer and friend she was non judgmental, and never let me give up. Working out with a buddy makes being accountable easy, especially when they can call your bluff. Tough love was her mantra.

There were five persons walking or  running around the stadium early every morning. One of the men was very over weight and looked like he could’ve been in his fifties. This man was consistent, and for an entire year, he never stopped his early morning ritual. We were consistent most days but went three days a week. After some time I noticed he had lost a lot of weight, and felt the need to compliment him on his success. This man advised that he was diabetic and had other medical problems thus decided to get serious about his life. His doctor advised he walk daily and change his diet.

Another thing I recall about those early morning walks / runs is the camaraderie and silent relationships built based on presence. We knew everyone by sight, and some by name. Even the security guards would know who we were. When you go somewhere often you are not anonymous, and that can be a good thing. People will say, ” hey you are doing great, keep it up,” or will ask, “how are you doing today, you don’t appear to be well?” Someone knows you exist and that matters to all of us.

Being fit is a way of life. It does not happen unless you make it happen. Looking at others won’t make you fit. Inspiration can only plant the desire, you have to make it happen. Sweat comes from action. Everything in life comes from action. When is the best time to do something – today, now.

This morning, I feel inspired. It’s time to start being consistent and take a step outside of my comfort zone. It’s time to let that morning air be inhaled from the outside and not from within. It’s time to stop finding all the reasons why I can’t, and not be afraid to do what appears to now be a challenge. What I know won’t matter or impact on my life unless action accompanies the knowledge. I’ve done it before. I’m inspired.

Going to get my sweats and shoes on :-)

Have a wonderful day, and be inspired to pursue your dreams! As you read, if it resonates, comment and share, maybe we can inspire the dreams of others to be a reality!

Googlers, Pens and growing up!

A small thought can lead to the profound…

This morning  while sharing some thoughts on my childhood with two of my children, I looked at myself in the mirror. I have a pair of glasses which I consider ‘googlers’. These spectacles are not my favorite, but they have the most features. I could not find my sunshades and resorted to their photo-grade feature of darkening with the sun. Thus began this whimsical conversation as I asked,

“How did Google decide on the name google,  I wonder if they were thinking of googlers?”

My son and daughter looked at me mystified and wary of how I would respond to this rhetorical question? I have this strange habit when I’m thinking to ask and answer questions all at once. Then of course a historical moment of reminiscing, brought forth the following;
“When I was at school we called some spectacles ‘googlers’. Googlers were the type of frames and lenses which brilliant professors and children wore. You had to have super intelligence to wear these, and every scientist was thought to own a pair, in my opinion in those days. ( never saw a pair on the brilliant scientist and my friend Milos Djukic, maybe he is the exception to the rule). My thoughts are on the folks who started google and if they wanted to establish a brilliant brand with seeing and vision.”
My son interjected at that point while his sister rolled her eyes, “makes some kind of sense mom,” as his sister said, “but Google has always been google and it does not matter why.” Thus I was forced, willingly to explain further;
“In my day as a child there was no Google. We had encyclopedias of information which one would have to be privileged to acquire as they were quite expensive. In fact, I recall your Grandma, ordering a set of the least expensive volumes , they were basic 27 pieces index included, for approximately $4000. Education was important to mom, and she sacrificed to pay the deposit and monthly installments of over $200.”
My son gasped, “wow, that’s a lot of money even for then”, so I described the twenty-six volumes from A to Z  of information collected, written, edited, reviewed, published and promoted as the way to gain knowledge. In fact, the index was necessary because this was the ‘search engine’… my daughter exclaims halting my explanation, “what about Wikipedia, thank God for that!” As I continued to explain how we got information and the importance of the ‘scientific journals’ in special  volumes, they looked incredulous, and I was happy to continue their ‘education’!
“Your aunt wanted the scientific volumes but we could not afford it and had to be satisfied with reading ‘The Book Of Knowledge’ as our encyclopedia was branded. This was a blue and cream version of Encyclopedia Britannica which was the Mercedes, and we had the Nissan basic model. These books had a place a grand display in our living room bookcase with a glass sliding front. Only one could be used at any time, always replaced in alphabetical order  and we were not allowed to fold the pages or mark the book. There was even insurance cover for these volumes. I was approximately 8 years old and your aunt was 10 years  when we got our set, and it was like winning a lottery for everyone in the house.”
Having gained some rapt attention, I went further back in time.
“When I started school at 3 years plus, we would learn to write with a blackboard and sticks of white chalk. Our homework was done on mini blackboards which we would take to school and if we were lucky our teacher would use colored chalk on the big blackboard in the classroom. Our eraser was a piece of sponge or special felted eraser made for these boards. Later, at 6 years old, I would start using a pencil and a rubber eraser, this was a great experience as I could make mistakes I wished to make and correct them if they were noticed. It also meant we were being prepared for the ‘big’ moment, when, at 7 years it was time to enter into the major league.”
They were laughing loudly at this point, as I continued;

Google article“The fountain ink pen was every child’s ambition as it meant you were becoming an adult and could be trusted with ‘ink’. Everyone knew you were ‘big’ by the ink stains on your shirt, skirt, and plastic pocket protectors were the ‘in thing’. Fountain pens were a status symbol for everyone. There were the cheap versions and the expensive ones with pieces of metal on the body of the pen. I endured my plastic version, simply happy to move up, and forward. On one occasion I got an expensive one as a gift, but can’t recall who gave it or why. For two years I wrote with a fountain pen, and was around for the automatic version (hahaha, wish I had a photo to show)! The automatic version of the fountain pen was an ink-filled cartridge, and were only for  a special model of the fountain pen. This cartridge eliminated ink spills while loading ink into the vial where the ‘nib or tip’ was attached. If I have not lost you yet, this was an incredible discovery which revolutionized writing and made it less messy. They were expensive in relation to the bottle of ink but everyone caught on eventually!”
The chuckles of wonder continued from my off-springs!
“By the time we were required to use the ball point pen, my confidence was over the roof! My handwriting was great, and my research skills were developing. Now there is Google.”
My son remarked, “and many students can’t write or hold a pen nowadays, but they can use a computer and Google.” My daughter seems impressed and shares her gratitude for Wikipedia once more.
Our conversation has taken me somewhere, far away, before Google was more than a pair of spectacles.
“History was learnt from asking questions of our grandparents , parents or a historian, or specialist in a specific field. People talked to children and younger ones, and they are still willing to answer questions, but now everyone goes to Google first.”
These final words ended our conversation, and left me thinking.

Getting back to my first question on Google seems less important now. What transpired in thirty minutes was storytelling. It was me, being in the place of my mom and grandparents, sharing a lesson which needed to be shared by someone  who has lived and is living the experiences. I’m remembering an article from bebee.com  I read yesterday by Jim Murray on the Phil Friedman & Randy Keho hive ‘All Business’. That hive is about all business from experienced persons sharing on what they know from things they have done or been around in business. At least that’s how I understand the description.

No longer are erasers made of sponge and felt used or crossing a line through a mistake done as corrections. Even liquid paper which was introduced to correct errors made by a ribbon from an old type-writer is no longer in demand. The liquid paper also replaced correction fluid as I recall from my memory – and that was a light pink fluid. Things are different now, and changes are made with a backspace and delete button in less than seconds sometimes.

Does this make sense to anyone, and can anyone remember these times. Some of us have actually lived through many changes, and our experiences with inventions continue with ease and acceptance. There is less fear of something new and an anxiousness for further development and evolution. A good example of easy acceptance can be seen with mobile phones. How many persons await a new version at the launch of the present version, or for  an ‘app’ or ‘model’ of something?

These are indeed interesting times, and these memories shared are from my mind and not Google!
Hope this post resonated with you, and please check out the following from Jim Murray and Phil Friedman & Randy Keho as mentioned above, on http://www.bebee.com

Phil & Randy Launch The All Business Hive. And Jim Thinks It’s Just What the Doctor Ordered.

The Beach and The Lighthouse

My Favorite Place

Yesterday I went to the beach, and this is meant to relax and inspire!
I like the journey to my favorite beach on the island. It can take two hours or a little more based on traffic and road-works.

To visualize my journey here is a map of Trinidad. I left Chaguanas and headed to Galera Point in Toco! Hope you can find it…

Trinidad map

A long way to go

This beach is unlike any other. There are trees, forested areas, and a winding road which runs parallel to the coast line. Here are some photos taken with my LG Nexus mobile phone.

Toco1a            Toco1b

This beach is very sandy and grainy with lots of coral and pebbles, and for the first time I saw quite a bit of seaweed on the shore and in the water. There were people enjoying their sea-bath and quite a few children around, having a last minute frolic before school reopens next week. For me though it was just the sky and the water suspended in time.

On this trip I promised Dean Owen I would write his sister’s name -‘Natasha’ in the sand – after reading his article on her life, and the link is here in the title… ‘She’s Blue‘. I tried to add ‘Owen’ and the water kept coming faster than I could write.

The road which takes me to the  beach ends at The Lighthouse at the top on Galera Point.

There are picnic tables and benches scattered around the lighthouse area for folks who visit and spend time inhaling the clean crisp sea breeze. Looking down through the mangrove and trees from the cliff top, is a breath-taking view of the ocean ,waves and rocks.

There are many things I’ve taken for granted through the years and going to the beach is one of them. Its always there. If I can’t get to one I’ll go to another. Times change, as do surroundings. Yesterday, I noticed some changes to my favorite beach. There were a few shops set up on entering the beach, a lifeguard post, and signs of commercialism from our local tourism agency. There was also a lot of garbage, plastic disposable wares, bottles and evidence that change may not be healthy for this environment.

More than nostalgia

I took my photos hoping to avoid the new changes, and chose to keep my memories as they were. Life seems to be a lot like this beautiful place I’ve known for all of my forty seven years. In its natural state its innocence is revered and as time passes awareness creeps in. We are bombarded with speed and efficiency, economy and ease, newness, and unpleasant realities.
Who will take the garbage out of your life, when you use disposable relationships and leave them littered as you have consumed to your satisfaction. The garbage comes from using and leaving something behind. Why not take out the garbage, recycle, and keep what is good. There was a time when we would use Tupperware containers to take our food to the beach, returning home with them and washing for another time. I’m guessing habits have changed in all personal and practical aspects of life. It makes a lot of sense now. Will you minimize the garbage in your life?

Maybe this is a season of understanding and a meeting of my past and present moving forward to a new tomorrow from today. Take a walk in the park, a walk on the beach, or simply look outside, this may be the last of your favorite place as you know it.
Hope you enjoyed my day yesterday and my new memories. There are two other pieces to share…
